Overview
Harrah’s primary casino property in Louisiana is right in the middle of the action, being centrally located at the end of Canal Street in the grand city of New Orleans. Within a stone’s throw are both the famed French Quarter and the Mississippi River Delta. The casino itself is spread out over 115,000 square feet and features the following plethora of gaming options to choose from: more than 90 table games, a well-apportioned poker room, and 2,100 slot machines.
Dining options are also considerable, with a number of restaurants offering many different regional cuisines. One particular highlight is the Sunday brunch buffet featuring live jazz and an amazing spread of courses to sample. For hotel rooms, Harrah’s constructed a 27-floor deluxe hotel containing 450 rooms in the year of 2006.
Prior to this time, the casino had arrangements with other hotels to provide accommodation to guests, including the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel. For the state of Louisiana, the Harrah’s New Orleans property is the only casino that is located completely on land. Other casinos in the state are built on barges or are simple horse racing venues that also contain slot machines. With this status, the property is known in legal terms as the state’s “official gaming establishment” (Louisiana Revised Statutes, Chapter 10, Title 4).
After the devastation caused in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, Harrah’s was forced to close this property to complete repairs and better the service offered to customers. The casino reopened in 2006 during the annual festival of Mardi Gras to an eager public. Prior to the grand opening of the property in 1999, the site was used as the Rivergate Convention Center. A tunnel exists under Poydras Street to help alleve traffic concerns and allow guests easy access to to valet parking.
